» David Janes/Knockout Motorsports ADRL Georgia Drags Preview |
|
|
Janes has high expectations going into Valdosta
(5-8-2008) MACON, GA – After a two-month layoff from competition within the American Drag Racing League’s Extreme 10.5 division, David Janes and the Knockout Motorsports Pontiac Grand Am are ready to get back to business in South Georgia. While the team has kept their focus tight on the 10.5-racing world, choosing to race nearly exclusively with the ADRL – Janes hasn’t had an opportunity to test as much as he would like.
“We really hoped to be able to carry our early momentum into the Tulsa race and get back onto the track pretty quick,” said Janes, who receives additional support from Mickey Thompson Tires. “The weather, though, threw a wrench in our plans and we still haven’t had the weather in the Midwest to do any testing locally. We’re in... [Read More]

Records shattered at PSCA K&N Filters Las Vegas Nationals
(5-8-2008) LAS VEGAS, NV – The PSCA rolled into the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on April 25th for the K& N Filters Las Vegas Nationals. Several notable records were broken including those of the top class (Hughes Performance Pro Street) and the insane small drag radial class Mickey Thompson Tires Wild Street.
Long Time PSCA racer and former Real Street record holder, Giuseppe Gentile brought out his revamped 2008 Shelby Mustang and shocked the fans with a new ET record of 6.29 @ 226 MPH. Gentile would like to thank Jason Pettis for the motor, Carl Rossler for the trans and Marty at Neal Chance for the converter. Unfortunately a broken crank trigger in the 3rd round ended the team's near perfect weekend.... [Read More]

Jim Halsey looking to rebound in Valdosta
(5-8-2008) STREET, MD – As Jim Halsey stood in Gene Fulton's Spartanburg, SC engine shop yesterday, thoughts of a convincing rebound were going through his mind. Funny how a single event can cast a disappointing shadow on a stellar season, but when you're as competitive as Jim Halsey, you'd like nothing more than a whirlwind turn around at your next outing. Halsey and team, in town for a valve job and head work, pulled out of Spartanburg this morning and headed for Georgia with renewed confidence that a rebound is just ahead on the horizon.
For a drag racer, it's sometimes easy to feel as though you're only as your good as your last race, and for Halsey, his last race didn't go exactly as planned. After a phenomenal early season of competit... [Read More]

Pro Outlaw Doorslammers head to VMP
(5-6-2008) DINWIDDIE, VA – On May 10th the Pro Outlaw Doorslammers will be competing at Virginia Motorsports Park for their second stop of the 2008 season. After a good start to the season at Kinston Dragway with Ernie Everett taking the win, the Pro Outlaw Doorslammers are ready to put on a show at one of the eastcoasts premier tracks, Virginia Motorsports Park.
"It's really exciting to compete with your own club at a track that hosts NHRA races," said POD member Kenny Ferguson. With an all-nitrous field of cars showing up for the season opener, it will be interesting to see what other powerplants will be represented at VMP Saturday.
James Cecil has assured us that he will be debuting his new paint scheme with new blow... [Read More]

JEGS ProMod Challenge officials release invitations to Thunder Valley Nationals
(5-6-2008) DELAWARE, OH – Three winners in four events, the reemergence of reigning champion Josh Hernandez, and a change at the top of the JEGS championship points standings are just a few of the reasons the JEGS ProMod Challenge is experiencing one of its best years ever.
Next on the docket is the fifth race of the 10-race season, the eighth annual O'Reilly Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals, to be contested May 16-18 at Bristol Dragway. It's going to be a tight field of just 20 professionals, which places extra importance on race day success.
Series organizers have sent invitations to the follow drivers, listed in alphabetical order: Mike Ashley, Joe Baker, Roger Burgess, Raymond Commisso... [Read More]

Pro Mod Astro Van, nitrous-injected station wagon battle during Mothers' Night at Street Fights
(5-6-2008) BRISTOL, TN – With Mother's Day on the horizon, the May 8 edition of Bristol Dragway’s Street Fights will host a grudge match in which every soccer mom will dream about competing. One of the fastest station wagons in the land will take on a Pro Mod Chevrolet Astro Van. That’s right…an Astro Van that performs long, smoky burnouts and is capable of speeds well over 175 mph.
Spectators at Sonic Mothers' Night are in for a special treat when “Blastro,” an old-school alcohol blown Pro Mod squares off against "Grocery Getter," a nitrous-injected Pontiac Super Stock wagon to decide the ultimate maternal vehicle.
The Charter Bandits return to Street Fights, with the... [Read More]

NMCA racers roar at Beech Bend
(5-6-2008) BOWLING GREEN, KY – The 7th Annual NOS Muscle Car Nationals held at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky was said to be “off the chain” by many fans and competitors this past weekend. With an exciting first race in Bradenton already completed last month, rumors of another full 20+ Scorpion Pro Street car count were flying around the Internet before Bowling Green, and although a few racers failed to show up, 17 total Pro Streeters made the haul to show who had the baddest machine this weekend.
In other news, a couple of former Nitto Super Street 10.5W champions made a showing at Beech Bend, Billy Glidden (2006 champ) and Jim Blair (2007 champ) made their 2008 debut. Combine the full fields in both heads-up and index muscle car classes,... [Read More]

WCOPMA prepares for 2008 season
(5-6-2008) SACRAMENTO, CA – Well, our season is almost here, and everyone is scrambling to finish their new cars and complete testing that has been going on recently. It looks like our race schedule is set with three races in Sacramento, California and two in Medford, Oregon. The first race in Medford will dictate the outcome of the second race. The Medford track management will have us back for the second race and with a larger purse, providing we have a full field of cars ready for the first round of racing at the first race. It is imperative that we all be ready to race this year, we have promised all the track operators we will have full fields and put on one heck of a show. If we produce what we have promised and contracted for, next year we will likely h... [Read More]

Emotional weekend for Rowe and company
(5-6-2008) LAGUNA HILLS, CA – After bouncing back from a wicked top end crash on Friday night and qualifying 4th with a borrowed race car amongst one of the quickest fields of Pro Modified cars ever assembled, Danny Rowe and the Hottinger Group-backed race team were looking very well going into the final elimination rounds on Sunday.
Rowe, who dismissed Mike Knowles in the opening round of competition Saturday evening, unfortunately had to face his own teammate Kirk Kuhns in the Embee Performance ’41 Willys in the second round. While having both cars in the top half of the field (Rowe No. 4, Kuhns No. 5) was an accomplishment in itself, it also placed both cars on the same side of the ladder. Kuhns, a formidable opponent as a teammate or not, was... [Read More]

Support for Troy Critchley
(5-5-2008) KALLANGUR, QLD – A group of Australian drag racers led by Troy’s former team principle, Victor Bray wish to hand a petition to the Australian Prime minister, Mr. Kevin Rudd which will contain signatures and names of racers, track officials, management and fans that are concerned for the future of Troy Critchley and would like to see the Australian government give whatever support available to ensure Troy has every opportunity during this testing time while he is in the hands of the American legal system. Troy currently is facing numerous very serious charges under Tennessee law.
By taking this action we as Troy's extended racing family don't want to belittle the tragedy that occurred in Selmer and we as a group along with Troy wish to extend o... [Read More]

Hernandez defends St. Louis title with big win over new points leader Pontieri
(5-4-2008) MADISON, IL – Reigning JEGS ProMod Challenge champion Josh Hernandez had a strong return to St. Louis, winning the race for the second year in a row and qualifying No. 1 to regain solid footing in the 2008 title chase.
In a repeat of last year's final, Hernandez's AMS Staff Leasing Camaro blew the doors off Tony Pontieri's Quality Plus Compressors '57 Chevy to win with a 5.934 at 242.36 mph to Pontieri's 6.318 at 193.88 mph.
"It was exactly the same because those poor guys were over there swapping motors again before the final round, just like last year," Hernandez said. "This time they managed to get up there and give us a race and I was happy to see that. I told them we'd wai... [Read More]

Coughlin loses closest drag race of the POWERade season
(5-4-2008) MADISON, IL – A few years ago, NHRA officials expanded the timing system to a fourth decimal point so that races decided by less than one thousandth of a second would have a definitive winner. On Sunday afternoon at Gateway International Raceway, reigning series champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. and veteran Kurt Johnson almost needed another digit to decide who won their head-to-head race as their quarter-mile contest came down to one-10 thousandths of a second (.0001 seconds).
The almost imperceptible amount of time made the quarterfinal race, which favored Johnson, the closest drag race of the entire season in all four professional classes. In fact, Johnson's winning 6.620 at 209.33 mph shows up dead-even on video fo... [Read More]
